Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) statistics, 2020​

Hig​hlights 

​ICT access 
Between 2019 and 2020, ICT access in the country improved as follows: 
   • number of mobile cellular phone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants - from 147.5 to 151.1;
   • number of internet subscriptions per 100 inhabitants - from 118.2 to 130.2; and
   • number of fixed telephone lines per 100 inhabitants - from 36.2 to 37.8.
 
Internet Usage
In 2020, International Bandwidth usage increased to 144,973 Mbits/s (Megabits per second) from 101,657 Mbits/s in 2019. The usage per inhabitant went up by 42.5% to reach 114,510 bits per second from 80,331 in 2019.

External trade
Trade in ICT goods and services from 2019 to 2020 was as follows:
   • Imports went down by 11.7% from Rs 15,354 million to Rs 13,554 million; and
   • Exports, including re-exports, declined by 7.3% from Rs 6,040 million to Rs 5,602 million.

Contribution to Gross Value Added (GVA)
The value added of ICT sector went up by 4.2% in nominal terms from Rs 25,356 million in 2019 to Rs 26,432 million in 2020. Its share in GVA was 7.0%, higher than in 2019 (5.8%).


Employment
Employment in large establishments (employing 10 or more persons) operating in ICT sector went up by 0.4% in 2020, i.e. 16,865 compared to 16,800 in 2019.


ICT Development Index (IDI)
Latest available figures for the IDI date back to year 2016. Mauritius with an index of 5.88 ranked first amo​ng African countries and 72nd out of 176 countries worldwide.  The methodology for the computation of a revised version of IDI is under review. Consensus has not been reached on the new methodology. Hence, the index is not available for years 2017 onwards.
