Education Statistics – 2025
Highlights


1.         Expenditure

            Government expenditure on education and training for the financial year 2024/2025 was estimated at Rs 24,061 million compared to Rs 21,352 million for 2023/2024, representing 8.0% and 9.3% of total expenditure respectively.

2.       Pre-primary education

Pre-primary schools numbered 801 in March 2025 with an enrolment of 26,704 children of whom 49.3% were girls. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 4 and 5 years) works out to 103.0% with an average of 14 pupils per teacher.

3.         Primary education

As at March 2025, there were 344 primary schools with 82,974 pupils of whom 49.2% were girls. The number of persons employed comprised 9,355 persons including 4,583 General Purpose teachers and 1,193 Asian Language/Arabic/Kreol Morisien teachers. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 6 to 11 years) is 106.3% and the pupil/teacher (general purpose) ratio works out to 18.

4.         Secondary education

   As at March 2025, the number of secondary schools, stood at 176 out of which 139 were offering the Regular Programme, the FPLNS from Grades 7 to 9 and Grade 9+ of the previous Extended Programme. The secondary school enrolment was 92,503 of whom 51.5% were girls. The number of teachers was 8,986. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 12 to 19 years) works out to 75.8% and the pupil/teacher ratio 10.

5.         Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC), National Certificate of Education (NCE), School Certificate (SC) & Higher School Certificate (HSC) Results

The PSAC pass rate, after re-assessment, decreased from 82.0% in 2023 to 79.5% in 2024. There were declines in the pass rates of other examinations: NCE dropped from 74.6% in 2023 to 69.5% in 2024, SC decreased from 73.7% to 72.7%, and HSC fell from 84.4% to 78.9%

6.         Tertiary Education

Tertiary level enrolment increased from 50,011 in 2023 to 51,860 students in 2024.
