Fourth quarter 2019
 
1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 557,200 at the fourth quarter of 2019 compared to 553,200 at the fourth quarter of 2018 and 545,700 at the third quarter of 2019.
 
2.   The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2019 is estimated at 6.4%, same rate as the fourth quarter 2018 but lower than the rate of 6.7% at the third quarter of 2019.
 
3.  The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2019 were:
 
(i)           The 37,900 unemployed comprised 14,500 males (38%) and 23,400 females (62%).
 
(ii)      17,400 or about 46% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
 
(iii)     Around 24,200 (64%) of the unemployed were not yet married. The majority of males (82%) were not yet married compared to 53% among the females
 
(iv)    Some 2,900 (8%) did not have a Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and 13,000 (34%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)      32,900 (87%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
 
(vi)      14,100 (37%) were looking for a job for the first time.
 
(vii)    4,200 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(vi)         4,100 or 11% lived in households with no employed persons.
 
 
Year 2019            
4.    Employment increased by 7,600 in 2019 to reach 551,300 compared to 543,700 in 2018.
 
5.    Unemployment rate for 2019 worked out to 6.7% compared to 6.9% in 2018.
