Second quarter 2019
1. Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 553,800 at the second quarter of 2019 compared to 541,500 at the second quarter of 2018 and 546,000 at the first quarter of 2019.
2. The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2019 is estimated at 6.6%, lower than the rates of 7.0% and 6.9% at the second quarter of 2018 and at the first quarter of 2019 respectively.
3. The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2019 were:
(i) The 39,100 unemployed comprised 13,400 males (34%) and 25,700 females (66%).
(ii) 16,100 or about 41% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
(iii) Around 22,200 (57%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (75%) was single compared to 47% among the females.
(iv) Some 4,300 or 11% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 14,100 (36%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
(v) 30,200 (77%) had been looking for work up to one year.
(vi) 10,500 (27%) were looking for a job for the first time.
(vii) 4,400 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
(viii) 6,200 or 16% lived in households with no employed persons.

4. Unemployment rate for 2019 is forecasted at 6.8% compared to 6.9% in 2018.
