Fourth quarter 2018
 
 
1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 553,200 at the fourth quarter of 2018 compared to 548,000 at the fourth quarter of 2017 and 536,800 at the third quarter of 2018.
 
2.   The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2018 is estimated at 6.4%, lower than the rates of 6.7% and 6.9% at the fourth quarter 2017 and at the third quarter of 2018 respectively.
 
3.  The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2018 were:
 
(i)       The 38,100 unemployed comprised 14,800 males (39%) and 23,300 females (61%).
 
(ii)      17,900 or about 47% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)     Around 23,400 (61%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (86%) was single compared to 46% among the females.
 
(iv)    Some 3,800 or 10% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 13,300 (35%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)      31,600 (83%) had been looking for work up to one year.
 
(vi)      12,300 (32%) were looking for a job for the first time.
 
(vii)    3,200 or 8% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)    4,300 or 11% lived in households with no employed persons.
 
 
Year 2018           
4.    Employment decreased by 1,400 in 2018 to reach 543,700 compared to 545,100 in 2017.
5.    Unemployment rate for 2018 worked out to 6.9% compared to 7.1% in 2017.
