Road Transport and Road Traffic Accident Statistics - Year 2023

Vehicles registered

1.  As at end of December 2023, some 676,441 vehicles were registered at the National Land Transport Authority, compared to 648,176 at the end of December 2021, i.e. an increase of 28,265 or +4.4%.

2.  Some 33,939 vehicles joined the fleet, whilst 5,674 were put out of circulation during the year.

3. The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickups and dual-purpose vehicles (371,866 or 55.0%) and auto/motor cycles (242,608 or 35.9%). The remaining 9.1% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.

 

Road traffic accidents

4.  Compared to 2022, accidents causing casualties went up by 9.2% in 2023, fatal accidents by 31.3%, serious injury accidents by 10.2% and slight injury accidents by 7.7% 

5.  Accident rate, expressed as the number of accidents per 100,000 mid-year population, was 2,994 in 2023 compared to 2,917 in 2022. The number of accidents per 1,000 mid-year registered vehicles works out to 55 in 2023 against 56 in 2022. 

6.  In 2023, the number of fatalities was 138 compared to 108 in 2022. Among the fatalities, 57 were riders/pillion riders of auto/motor cycles and 42 were pedestrians.
