Road Transport and Road Traffic Accident Statistics (Island of Mauritius) - Year 2021 

Highlights

 

Vehicles registered

1.  At end of December 2021, some 622,988 vehicles were registered at the National Land Transport Authority, compared to 600,053 at the end of December 2020, i.e. an increase of 22,935 or +3.8%.
2.  Some 29,478 vehicles joined the fleet, whilst 6,543 were put out of circulation during the year.

3. The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickups and dual-purpose vehicles (334,104 or 53.6%) and motorized two-wheelers (229,563 or 36.8%). The remaining 9.5% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.

 

Road traffic accidents

4.   The number of road traffic accidents decreased by 1.2% from 28,611 in 2020 to 28,272 in 2021.  Among these accidents, 104 were fatal (caused death) against 119 in the preceding year, down by 12.6%.
5.   Accident rate, (number of accidents per 100,000 mid-year population) was 2,314 in 2021 compared to 2,341 in 2020. The number of accidents per 1,000 mid-year registered vehicles works out to 46 in 2021 against 49 in 2020.

6.  In 2021, the number of fatalities was 108 (-17.6%) against the figure of 131 in 2020. Among the fatalities, 64 (59.3%) were riders/pillion riders of auto/motor cycle and 22 (20.4%) were pedestrians
