Road Transport and Road Traffic Accident Statistics -  (Island of Mauritius) - Year 2019 

 

Highlights

Vehicles registered

1.  At end of December 2019, some 580,629 vehicles were registered at the National Land Transport Authority, compared to 556,001 at the end of December 2018, i.e. an increase of 24,628 or 4.4%.
2. Some 30,345 vehicles joined the fleet, whilst 5,717 were put out of circulation during the year.

3. The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickup and dual-purpose vehicles (307,081 or 53%) and motorized two-wheelers (216,863 or 37%). The remaining 10% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.

Road traffic accidents

4.   The number of road traffic accidents increased by 2.0% from 29,075 in 2018 to 29,644 in 2019.  Among these accidents, 130 were fatal (caused death) against 132 in the preceding year, down by 1.5%.
5.   Accident rate, (number of accidents per 100,000 mid-year population) is estimated at 2,379, same as in 2018. The number of accidents per 1,000 mid-year registered vehicles works out to 51 against 54 in 2018.

6.  The total number of vehicles (motor and non-motorised) involved in road accidents in 2019 was 58,267, that is, 1,163 or 2.0% higher​ than the 2018 figure of 57,104.
7.  The number of casualties (fatalities and persons injured as a result of road accidents) decreased by 6.3% from 3,718 in 2018 to 3,484 in 2019. 

​8.  In 2019, the number of fatalities was 144 (+0.7%) against the figure of 143 in 2018. Among the fatalities, 55 (38.2%) were riders/pillion riders of auto/motor cycle and 35 (24.3%) were pedestrians.
