Highlights

Population

1.   As at end of 2024, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,244,477 comprising 615,784 males and 628,693 females.

2.   Compared to a figure of 1,247,317 at the end of 2023, the population decreased by 2,840 during the year 2024, representing a decrease of 0.23%.

3.   Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2024 was as follows:

4.   The dependency ratio, that is the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 65 years and above per 1,000 population aged 15-64 years, was 424.8 in 2023 and 431.7 in 2024.

Vital Statistics

5.   In 2024, the number of live births registered was 12,853, that is 0.1% lower than in 2023. The crude birth rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 10.3 for both 2023 and 2024.

6.   There were 12,507 deaths registered in 2024, showing an increase of 5.6% compared to 11,839 in 2023.  The crude death rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 9.5 in 2023 and 10.0 in 2024.

7.  The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2024 was 185, higher than the 2023 figure of 168. The infant mortality rate increased from 13.1 per 1,000 live births in 2023 to 14.4 in 2024.

8.   The number of still births registered during the year 2024 was 93, compared to 104 in 2023.  The still birth rate decreased from 8.0 per 1,000 total births in 2023 to 7.2 in 2024.

9.  The number of marriages registered during the year 2024 was 8,220, i.e. 5.0% lower than the figure of 8,654 in 2023. The crude marriage rate decreased from 13.9 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2023 to 13.2 in 2024.​
