Population

1.   As at end of 2021, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,263,888 comprising 624,820 males and 639,068 females.

2.   Compared to a figure of 1,266,030 at the end of 2020, the population decreased by 2,142 during the year 2021, representing a decrease of 0.17%.

3.   Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2021 was as follows:

                        Island of Mauritius      1,219,187

                        Island of Rodrigues         44,427

                        Other islands                       274

 

4.   The dependency ratio, that is the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 65 years and above per 1,000 population aged 15-64 years, was 409.0 in 2020 and 413.0 in 2021.

 

Vital Statistics

5.   In 2021, the number of live births registered was 12,982, that is 483 or 3.6% lower than in 2020. The crude birth rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 10.6 for 2020 and 10.3 for 2021.

6.   There were 13,274 deaths registered in 2021, showing an increase of 2,214 or 20.0% compared to 11,060 in 2020.  The crude death rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 8.7 in 2020 and 10.5 in 2021.

7.  The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2021 was 179, lower than the 2020 figure of 200. The infant mortality rate decreased from 14.9 per 1,000 live births in 2020 to 13.8 in 2021.

8.   The number of still births registered during the year 2021 was 131, compared to 141 in 2020.  The still birth rate decreased from 10.4 per 1,000 total births in 2020 to 10.0 in 2021.

9.  The number of marriages registered during the year 2021 was 8,186 i.e. 18.1% higher than the figure of 6,929 in 2020. The crude marriage rate increased from 10.9 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2020 to 12.9 in 2021.
