Population
 
1.  As at end of 2019, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,265,475 comprising 626,022 males and 639,453 females.
2.  Compared to a figure of 1,265,637 at the end of 2018, the population decreased by 162 or -0.01% during the year 2019.
3.  Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2019 was as follows:

4.  The dependency ratio, that is the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 65 years and above per 1,000 population aged 15-64 years, was 408.3 in 2018 and 408.5 in 2019.
 
Vital Statistics
 
5.  In 2019, the number of live births registered was 12,862, that is 103 or 0.8% less than in 2018.  The crude birth rate per 1,000 mid-year population remained at 10.2 for both 2018 and 2019.
6.  There were 11,174 deaths registered in 2019, showing an increase of 387 or 3.6% compared to 10,787 in 2018.  The crude death rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 8.5 in 2018 and 8.8 in 2019.
7.  The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2019 was 187, higher than the 2018 figure of 181. The infant mortality rate increased from 14.0 per 1,000 live births in 2018 to 14.5 in 2019.
8.  The number of still births registered during the year 2019 was 139, compared to 130 in 2018.  The still birth rate increased from 9.9 per 1,000 total births in 2018 to 10.7 in 2019.
9.  The number of marriages registered during the year 2019 was 9,709 i.e. 3.2% lower than the figure of 10,034 in 2018. The crude marriage rate decreased from 15.9 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2018 to 15.3 in 2019.
