​Population and Vital Statistics - Republic of Mauritius,  January – June 2021

Population

1.         As at 1 July 2021, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,266,334, with a rise of 320 (+0.03%) over the population as at 1 July 2020.

2.         Islandwise, the population as at 1 July 2021 was as follows:

            Island of Mauritius      1,221,844

            Island of Rodrigues          44,216

            Agalega and St Brandon       274

 

Vital Statistics

3.         The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2021 was 6,693, compared to 6,856 registered during the first semester of 2020. Some 13,030 live births are expected for the year 2021 leading to a crude birth rate of 10.3 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 10.6 the preceding year.

4.         Some 5,464 deaths were registered during the first six months of 2021, compared to 5,392 in the corresponding period of 2020. Around 11,210 deaths are expected for the year 2021, resulting in a crude death rate of 8.9 per 1,000 mid-year population, compared to 8.7 in 2020.

5.         Infant deaths registered during the first six months of 2021 was 101, against 105 in the corresponding period of 2020. Around 195 infant deaths are expected for the year 2021, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 15.0 per 1,000 live births, against 14.9 in 2020.

6.         The number of still births registered during the first semester of 2021 was 67, compared to 81 in the corresponding period in 2020. Around 120 still births are expected during the year 2021, resulting in a still birth rate of 9.1 per 1,000 total births, compared to 10.4 in 2020.

​​​​​​​​​7.            The number of marriages registered in the first semester of 2021 was 2,973, i.e. 22.4% higher than the figure of 2,429 in the corresponding period of 2020. Around 8,080 marriages are expected for the year 2021. The crude marriage rate works out to 12.8 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 10.9 in 2020.
