Highlights
Change in employment from March 2016 to March 2017
1.Employment in large establishments increased by 1,060 from 315,907 (195,504 males and 120,403 females) to 316,967 (194,984 males and 121,983 females).
2. Main changes in employment were registered in the following industry groups:

3. Employment in the General Government Sector increased by 3,159 from 74,006 (46,079 males and 27,927 females) to 77,165 (47,223 males and 29,942 females). Female employment increased by 2,015 while male employment increased by 1,144.
4. Employment in large Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) decreased by 1,277 from 52,537 (25,750 males and 26,787 females) to 51,260 (25,290 males and 25,970 females).
5. The number of foreign workers decreased by 621 from 29,153 (20,041 males and 9,112 females) to 28,532 (20,108 males and 8,424 females).

6. Overall average monthly earnings in large establishments increased by 3.7% from Rs 26,594 to Rs 27,574. A general upward trend was observed in almost all industry groups. Highest increases were registered in ‘Real estate activities’ (10.5%), ‘Transportation and storage’ (6.9%) and ‘Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities’ (6.4%).
7. Average monthly earnings in the large establishments of the EOE sector increased by 2.6% from Rs 15,806 to Rs 16,224.
