Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Year 2021

Highlights

1. The labour force, employment and unemployment for the year 2021 are based on the results of the Continuous Multi-Purpose Household Survey (CMPHS). 

2. Labour force decreased by 37,300 (-17,800 males and -19,500 females) from 570,100 in 2020 to 532,800 in 2021. During the same period, the number of those outside labour force increased by 44,000 from 431,600 to 475,600.

3. Mauritian employment decreased by 33,500 (-17,300 males and -16,200 females) from 517,900 in 2020 to 484,400 in 2021. 

4. Unemployment decreased by 3,800 (-500 males and -3,300 females) from 52,200 in 2020 to 48,400 in 2021 resulting in an unemployment rate of 9.1%. From 2020 to 2021, male unemployment rate increased from 7.8% to 8.1% while female unemployment rate decreased from 11.1% to 10.6%.

5. Unemployment rate in 2021 was highest in the lowest age group (16 to 24 years) with a rate of 27.7% (25.2% for male and 30.8% for female) and decreased progressively with increasing age.
