Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Fourth Quarter 2021

Highlights

1.       Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 509,900 in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to 476,100 in the third quarter of 2021 and 523,700 in the fourth quarter of 2020.

 

2.       The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2021 is estimated at 8.1%, compared to the rate of 9.5% at the third quarter of 2021 and the rate of 10.4% at the fourth quarter of 2020.

 

3.       The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 456,900 in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to 484,200 in the third quarter of 2021 and 418,200 in the fourth quarter of 2020.

 

4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2021 were:

 

  1. (i) The 44,900 unemployed comprised 22,700 males (51%) and 22,200 females (49%).
  2. (ii) Around 29,000 (65%) of the unemployed were single; males (74%) and females (55%).
  3. (iii) Some 22,600 (50%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 5,000 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
  4. (iv) Around 26,600 (59%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
  5. (v) Some 13,000 (29%) were looking for a job for the first time.
  6. (vi) Around 18,400 (41%) were registered at the Employment Service Information Centre.
  7. (vii) Some 8,000 or 18% of the unemployed were heads of households.
  8. (viii) Around 10,100 (22%) lived in households with no employed persons.
  9. (ix) Some 15,800 or about 35% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
  10. (x) There were 8,600 (19%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job.  Some 2,800 possessed a qualification below SC.
