Education Statistics – Year 2026
Highlights
1. Expenditure
Government expenditure on education and training for the financial year 2025/2026 was estimated at Rs 25,784 million compared to Rs 24,224 million for 2024/2025, representing 8.9% and 8.0% of total expenditure respectively.
2. Pre-primary education
Pre-primary schools numbered 792 in March 2026 with an enrolment of 25,936 children of whom 49.3% were girls. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 4 and 5 years) works out to 102.8% with an average of 13 pupils per teacher.

Primary education
As at March 2026, there were 352 primary schools with 82,514 pupils of whom 49.2% were girls. The number of persons employed comprised 9,772 persons including 4,759 General Purpose teachers and 1,245 Asian Language/ Arabic/ Kreol Morisien teachers. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 6 to 11 years) is 106.7% and the pupil/teacher (general purpose) ratio works out to 17.

Secondary education
As at March 2026, the number of secondary schools, stood at 173 out of which 134 were offering both the Regular Programme and the Foundation Programme in Literacy, Numeracy and Skills (FPLNS) from Grades 7 to 9. The secondary school enrolment was 88,468 of whom 52.2% were girls. The number of teachers was 8,805. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 12 to 19 years) works out to 74.3% and the pupil/teacher ratio 10.

Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC), National Certificate of Education (NCE), School Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC)
Results
The PSAC pass rate, after re-assessment, remained unchanged in 2025, at 79.5%. The NCE pass rate increased from 69.4% in 2024 to 70.4% in 2025. SC pass rate declined from 72.7% to 69.3%, while the HSC pass rate rose from 78.9% to 79.0%.

Tertiary education
Tertiary level enrolment stood at 50,480 in 2025, representing a decrease of 2.1% compared to 2024.
