Education Statistics - Year 2017
Highlights
 
1.         Expenditure
            Government expenditure on education and training for the financial years 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 are estimated at Rs 16,791 million and Rs 18,214 million, representing 12.7% and 12.4% of total expenditure respectively.
2.         Pre-primary education
Pre-primary schools numbered 883 in March 2017 with an enrolment of 27,276 children of whom around 49% were girls. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 4 and 5 years) works out to 96% with an average of 12 pupils per teacher.
3.         Primary education
As at March 2017, there were 318 primary schools with 92,989 pupils of whom 51% were boys. Total staff comprised 7,778 persons including 3,923 General Purpose Teachers and 1,261 Oriental Language teachers. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 6 to 11 years) is 97% and the pupil/teacher (general purpose) ratio works out to 24.
4.         Secondary education
             I.      General
As at March 2017, there were 175 schools providing secondary education in the general stream. The secondary school enrolment was 110,582 of whom 52% were girls. The number of teachers was 8,222. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per
100 population aged 12 to 19 years) works out to 72% and the pupil/teacher ratio 13.
           II.      Pre-vocational
Pre-vocational education was dispensed in 110 schools in March 2017 with an enrolment of 9,047 students and 959 teaching staff. Boys pre-dominated in these
pre-vocational schools, representing around 65 % of enrolment.  The pupil/teacher ratio
was 9.
5.         CPE, SC & HSC Results
Pass rate for the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) examination before re-sit showed a decrease from 70.3% in 2015 to 69.8% in 2016.  The pass rate, including re-sit school candidates, stood at 74.7%.  For the Cambridge School Certificate (SC), the pass rate decreased from 72.5% in 2015 to 72.0% in 2016. For the Cambridge Higher School Certificate (HSC), it increased from 75.3% to 75.5%.
6.         Tertiary Education
Tertiary level enrolment decreased from 48,970 in 2015 to 48,089 students in 2016.
