Highlights
1Expenditure
 
Government expenditure on education and training for the financial years 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 are estimated at Rs 15,807 million and Rs 17,468 million, representing 12.7% and 12.3% of total expenditure respectively.
2. Pre-primary education
Pre-primary schools numbered 911 in March 2016 with an enrolment of 28,866 children of whom around 49% were girls. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 4 and 5 years) works out to 100% with an average of 13 pupils per teacher.
3. Primary education
As at March 2016, there were 318 primary schools with 97,300 pupils of whom 51% were boys. Total staff comprised 7,994 persons including 4,084 General Purpose Teachers and 1,384 Oriental Language teachers. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 6 to 11 years) is 97% and the pupil/teacher (general purpose) ratio works out to 24.
4. Secondary education
   I. General
         As at March 2016, there were 173 schools providing secondary education in the general stream. The secondary school enrolment was 111,152 of whom 52% were girls. The number of teachers was 8,354. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 12 to 19 years) works out to 72% and the pupil/teacher ratio 13.
   II. Pre-vocational
Pre-vocational education was dispensed in 114 schools in March 2016 with an enrolment of 9,792 students and 1,005 teaching staff. Boys pre-dominated in these pre-vocational schools representing around 66 % of enrolment. The pupil/teacher ratio was 10.
5. CPE, SC & HSC Results
Pass rate for the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) examination before re-sit showed an increase from 69.4% in 2014 to 70.3% in 2015.  The pass rate including re-sit school candidates stood at 74.2%.  For the Cambridge School Certificate (SC), the pass rate decreased from 73.4% in 2014 to 72.5% in 2015. For the Cambridge Higher School Certificate (HSC), it decreased slightly from 75.4% to 75.3%.
6.  Tertiary Education
Tertiary level enrolment decreased fr​om 50,608 in 2014 to 48,970 students in 2015.
