Agricultural and Fish Production, Year 2019
Highlights
1. Sugar cane
The production of sugar cane went up by 7.9% from 3,154,515 tonnes in 2018 to 3,405,250 tonnes in 2019. The average yield has increased by 14.2% from 66.16 tonnes per hectare in 2018 to 75.58 in 2019. The area harvested decreased from 47,678 hectares in 2018 to 45,054 hectares in 2019.
The production of sugar went up by 2.4% from 323,406 tonnes in 2018 to 331,105 tonnes in 2019. Compared to 10.26% in 2018, the average extraction rate was 9.73% in 2019 representing a decrease of 5.2%.
2. Tea
Area under tea plantation in 2019 was 656 hectares same as in 2018. Production of green tea leaves went up by 3.4% from 8,056 tonnes in 2018 to 8,329 tonnes in 2019. The production of manufactured tea increased by 7.7% from 1,470 tonnes in 2018 to 1,583 tonnes in 2019.
3. Food Crops
A total area of 7,334 hectares under food crops was harvested in 2019, representing a decrease of 4.1% over the figure of 7,646 hectares in 2018. The production decreased by 3.2% from 96,847 tonnes to 93,736 tonnes in 2019, mainly explained by unfavourable climatic conditions. The area under rice cultivation harvested decreased by 53.8% from 13 hectares in 2018 to 6 hectares in 2019. However, the production of paddy rice went up by 10.5% from 19 tonnes to 21 tonnes during the same period.
4. Livestock
In 2019, beef production from live cattle was 2,051 tonnes, 0.1% lower than the production of 2,053 tonnes in 2018. Production of beef from the slaughter of imported cattle increased by 0.2% and that of local beef went down by 7.7%.
Production of goat meat and mutton went down by 31.1% from 61 tonnes in 2018 to 42 tonnes in 2019. The production of pork increased by 9.8%.
5. Poultry
The production of poultry was 51,000 tonnes in 2019 compared to 49,000 tonnes in 2018.
6. Fish
Fish production increased by 8.7% from 29,116 tonnes in 2018 to 31,663 tonnes in 2019. Production of other catch (tuna, bank etc) rose by 9.4% and that of fresh coastal fish catch decreased by 1.3%.
