Road Transport and Road Traffic Accident Statistics (Island of Mauritius) -January-June 2026

 Highlights

Vehicles registered

​1.   As at end of June 2026, some 761,531 vehicles were registered at the National Land Transport Authority, compared to 746,961 as at end of December 2025, i.e. an increase of 14,570 (+2.0%).
2.   ​Some 17,727 vehicles joined the fleet, whilst 3,157 were put out of circulation during the first semester.

3.   The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickups and dual-purpose vehicles 433,185 (56.9%) and auto/motor cycles 261,510 (34.3%). The remaining 66,836 (8.8%) comprised vans, lorries and trucks, buses and other vehicles.

 

Road traffic accidents

4.   The number of road accidents registered during the first semester of 2026 was 21,845, that is, 10.9% higher than the figure of 19,696 for the first semester of 2025.
5.  During the first semester of 2026 the number of road traffic accidents causing casualties (fatalities and persons injured as a result of road accidents) increased by 4.0% to 1,149 compared to 1,105 in the corresponding period of 2025.  Amongst 66 were fatal compared to 58 during January to June 2025. Non-injury accidents increased by 11.3% to 20,696, against 18,591 for the corresponding period of 2025.

​6.  The number of persons who died as a result of road accidents during the first semester of 2026 was 69 as compared to 63 during the corresponding period of 2025. Among the casualties, the most vulnerable category of road users were riders/pillion riders of motorized two wheelers (32), followed by pedestrians (17).
