Population

1.   As at end of 2020, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,266,030 comprising 626,156 males and 639,874 females.

2.   Compared to a figure of 1,265,475 at the end of 2019, the population increased by 555 or 0.04% during the year 2020.

3.   Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2020 was as follows:

4.   The dependency ratio, that is the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 65 years and above per 1,000 population aged 15-64 years, was 408.5 in 2019 and 409.0 in 2020.

Vital Statistics

5.   In 2020, the number of live births registered was 13,465, that is 603 or 4.7% higher than in 2019. The crude birth rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 10.2 for 2019 and 10.6 for 2020.

6.   Some 11,060 deaths registered in 2020, showing a decrease of 114 or 1.0% compared to 11,174 in 2019.  The crude death rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 8.8 in 2019 and 8.7 in 2020.

7.  The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2020 was 200, higher than the 2019 figure of 187. The infant mortality rate increased from 14.5 per 1,000 live births in 2019 to 14.9 in 2020.

8.   The number of still births registered during the year 2020 was 141, compared to 139 in 2019.  The still birth rate decreased from 10.7 per 1,000 total births in 2019 to 10.4 in 2020.

9.  The number of marriages registered during the year 2020 was 6,929 i.e. 28.6% lower than the figure of 9,709 in 2019. The crude marriage rate decreased from 15.3 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2019 to 10.9 in 2020.
