​​Population and Vital Statistics - Republic of Mauritius - January – June 2026

Highlights

Population

1.    As at 1 July 2026, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,240,316, with a decrease of 3,425 (-0.28%) over the population as at 1 July 2025.

2.    Islandwise, the population as at 1 July 2026 was as follows:

            Island of Mauritius      1,194,974

            Island of Rodrigues          45,012

            Agalega and St Brandon       330

      

Vital Statistics

3.   The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2026 was 6,386, compared to 7,064 registered during the first semester of 2025. Some 12,520 live births are expected for the year 2026, leading to a crude birth rate of 10.1 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 10.7 the preceding year.

4.   Some 6,333 deaths were registered during the first six months of 2026, compared to 6,207 in the corresponding period of 2025. Around 12,900 deaths are expected for the year 2026, resulting in a crude death rate of 10.4 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 10.2 in 2025.

5.  Infant deaths registered during the first six months of 2026 was 86, against 77 in the corresponding period of 2025. Around 170 infant deaths are expected for the year 2026, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 13.6 per 1,000 live births, against 11.6 in 2025.

6.  The number of still births registered during the first semester of 2026 was 52, compared to 54 in the corresponding period in 2025. Around 97 still births are expected during the year 2026, resulting in a still birth rate of 7.7 per 1,000 total births, compared to 7.9 in 2025.

7.  The number of marriages registered in the first semester of 2026 was 3,431, i.e. 2.4% lower than the figure of 3,515 in the corresponding period of 2025. Around 7,490 marriages are expected for the year 2026. The crude marriage rate works out to 12.1 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2026, against 12.4 in 2025.
