Population

1.    As at 1 July 2025, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,243,741, with a decrease of 2,038 (-0.16%) over the population as at 1 July 2024.

2.    Islandwise, the population as at 1 July 2025 was as follows:

Vital Statistics

3.    The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2025 was 7,064, compared to 6,268 registered during the first semester of 2024. Some 13,920 live births are expected for the year 2025, leading to a crude birth rate of 11.2 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 10.3 the preceding year.

4.    Some 6,207 deaths were registered during the first six months of 2025, compared to 6,213 in the corresponding period of 2024. Around 12,470 deaths are expected for the year 2025, resulting in a crude death rate of 10.0 per 1,000 mid-year population, same as in 2024

5.    Infant deaths registered during the first six months of 2025 was 77, against 93 in the corresponding period of 2024. Around 155 infant deaths are expected for the year 2025, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 11.1 per 1,000 live births, against 14.3 in 2024.

6.    The number of still births registered during the first semester of 2025 was 54, compared to 47 in the corresponding period in 2024. Around 107 still births are expected during the year 2025, resulting in a still birth rate of 7.6 per 1,000 total births, compared to 7.3 in 2024.

​7.    The number of marriages registered in the first semester of 2025 was 3,515, i.e. 6.1% lower than the figure of 3,745 in the corresponding period of 2024. Around 7,710 marriages are expected for the year 2025. The crude marriage rate works out to 12.4 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2025, against 13.2 in 2024.
