1. As at 1 July 2023, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,261,041, with a decrease of 1,482 (-0.12%) over the population as at 1 July 2022.

3. The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2023 was 6,508, compared to 6,079 registered during the first semester of 2022. Some 12,810 live births are expected for the year 2023, leading to a crude birth rate of 10.2 per 1,000 mid-year population, against 9.6 the preceding year.
4. Some 5,738 deaths were registered during the first six months of 2023, compared to 6,519 in the corresponding period of 2022. Around 12,090 deaths are expected for the year 2023, resulting in a crude death rate of 9.6 per 1,000 mid-year population, compared to 10.2 in 2022.
5. Infant deaths registered during the first six months of 2023 was 91, against 75 in the corresponding period of 2022. Around 175 infant deaths are expected for the year 2023, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 13.7 per 1,000 live births, against 14.2 in 2022.
6. The number of still births registered during the first semester of 2023 was 56, compared to 61 in the corresponding period in 2022. Around 104 still births are expected during the year 2023, resulting in a still birth rate of 8.1 per 1,000 total births, compared to 9.1 in 2022.
7. The number of marriages registered in the first semester of 2023 was 4,101, i.e. 9.8% lower than the figure of 4,547 in the corresponding period of 2022. Around 9,400 marriages are expected for the year 2023. The crude marriage rate works out to 14.9 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2023, against 15.1 in 2022.
