Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Year 2023 


Highlights

 

  1. 1. The labour force, employment and unemployment for the year 2023 are based on the results of the Continuous Multi-Purpose Household Survey (CMPHS).

  1. 2. Labour force increased by 30,000 (+5,900 males and +24,100 females) from 562,800 in 2022 to 592,800 in 2023. During the same period, the number of those outside labour force decreased by 26,000 from 448,200 to 422,200.

  2. 3. Mauritian employment increased by 35,600 (+10,300 males and +25,300 females) from 519,600 in 2022 to 555,200 in 2023.

  3. 4. Unemployment decreased by 5,600 (-4,400 males and -1,200 females) from 43,200 in 2022 to 37,600 in 2023 resulting in an unemployment rate of 6.3%. From 2022 to 2023, male unemployment rate decreased from 6.0% to 4.6% and female unemployment rate decreased from 10.2% to 8.7%.

  4. 5. Unemployment rate in 2023 was highest in the lowest age group (16 to 24 years) with a rate of 18.2% (15.9% for male and 21.1% for female) and decreased progressively with increasing age.
