Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Third Quarter 2022

Highlights

1.    Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 524,800 in the third quarter of 2022 compared to 515,500 in the second quarter of 2022 and 476,100 in the third quarter of 2021.

2.    The unemployment rate for the third quarter of 2022 is estimated at 7.5%, compared to the rate of 8.1% at the second quarter of 2022 and the rate of 9.5% at the third quarter of 2021.

3.    The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 443,300 in the third quarter of 2022 compared to 451,500 in the second quarter of 2022 and 484,200 in the third quarter of 2021.

4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the third quarter of 2022 were:

  1. ​       (i)  The 42,800 unemployed comprised 20,200 males (47%) and 22,600 females (53%).
  2.         (ii) Around 26,600 (62%) of the unemployed were single; males (83%) and females (44%).
  3.         (iii) Some 24,300 (57%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 2,500 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
  4.         (iv) Around 30,700 (72%) had been looking for work for up to one year. 
  5.          (v)  Some 17,300 (40%) were looking for a job for the first time.
  6.         (vi) Around 12,900 (30%) were registered at the Employment Service Information Centre.
  7.         (vii) Some 5,900 or 14% of the unemployed were heads of households.
  8.         (viii) Around 10,900 (25%) lived in households with no employed persons.
  9.         (ix) Some 15,400 or about 36% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
  10.         (x) There were 9,800 (23%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job.  Some 5,400 possessed a qualification below SC.
