Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 550,600 in the second quarter of 2026 compared to 553,700 in the first quarter of 2026 and 550,100 in the second quarter of 2025.

The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2026 is estimated at 5.5%, compared to the rate of 5.7% at the first quarter of 2026 and the rate of 5.9% at the second quarter of 2025.

The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 409,000 in the second quarter of 2026 compared to 403,800 in the first quarter of 2026 and 409,800 in the second quarter of 2025.

The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2026 were:

The 32,000 unemployed comprised 14,400 males (45%) and 17,600 females (55%).

(ii)

Around 17,700 (55%) of the unemployed were single; males (71%) and females (43%).

(iii)
|
Some 14,700 (46%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 2,900 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.

Around 26,900 (84%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
|

(v)
|
Some 9,000 (28%) were looking for a job for the first time.
|

(vi)
|
Around 12,400 (39%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.

Some 3,400 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
|

(viii)

Around 5,600 (18%) lived in households with no employed persons
|

(ix)
|
Some 11,600 or about 36% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.

There were 6,100 (19%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 2,700 possessed a qualification below SC.
