Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – 2nd Quarter 2022

Highlights​

1.       Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 515,500 in the second quarter of 2022 compared to 502,500 in the first quarter of 2022 and 466,600 in the second quarter of 2021.

2.       The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2022 is estimated at 8.1%, compared to the rate of 8.7% at the first quarter of 2022 and the rate of 10.5% at the second quarter of 2021.

3.       The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 451,500 in the second quarter of 2022 compared to 459,300 in the first quarter of 2022 and 486,000 in the second quarter of 2021.

4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2022 were:

  1.        (i)  The 45,300 unemployed comprised 22,200 males (49%) and 23,100 females (51%).
  2.        (ii) Around 28,300 (62%) of the unemployed were single; males (77%) and females (49%).
  3.        (iii) Some 24,100 (53%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 6,600 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
  4.       (iv) Around 30,100 (66%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
  5.       (v)  Some 17,200 (38%) were looking for a job for the first time.
  6.       (vi) Around 13,000 (29%) were registered at the Employment Service Information Centre.
  7.       (vii) Some 5,100 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
  8.       (viii) Around 11,800 (26%) lived in households with no employed persons.
  9.       (ix) Some 15,500 or about 34% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
  10.       (x) There were 8,800 (19%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job.  Some 4,400 possessed a qualification below SC.
