 Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) statistics, 2022


Highlights

ICT Infrastructure

B​etween 2021 and 2022, ICT access in the country changed as follows:

  • ​  .  ​mobile cellular phone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants - from 156.0 to 166.3;

  .  internet subscriptions per 100 inhabitants - from 143.3 to 152.6; and

  .  fixed telephone lines per 100 inhabitants - from 37.1 to 36.6.

           

 Internet Usage

In 2022, International Bandwidth Usage was 235,682 Megabits per second (Mbit/s) compared to 211,312 Mbit/s in 2021. The usage per inhabitant progressed by 11.8% from 167,192 bits per second in 2021 to 186,872 bits per second in 2022.

 

ICT Usage in Education Sector

  •     .  In 2022, 75% of primary schools had internet access for students for study purposes. At secondary level, 100% schools had internet access for students for study purposes.
  •    .  In both 2021 and 2022, the ratio of students per computer was 13 for primary level and 10 for secondary level. 
  •    .  The percentage of students who enrolled in ICT or an ICT-related field at tertiary level was estimated at 8.8% in 2022 compared to 9.2% in 2021.

     
    External trade

  • Trade in ICT goods and services from 2021 to 2022 progressed as follows:
  •   .  imports by 23.7% from Rs 17,160 million to Rs 21,225 million; and
  •   .  exports, including re-exports, by 12.8% from Rs 6,929 million to Rs 7,815 million.

     

Contribution to Gross Value Added (GVA)

The value added of ICT sector went up by 4.9% in nominal terms from Rs 28,177 million in 2021 to Rs 29,553 million in 2022. Its share in GVA was 5.9%, lower than in 2021 (6.7%).

 

Employment

​Employment in large establishments (employing 10 or more persons) operating in ICT sector went up by 2.1% from 16,950 in 2021 to 17,300 in 2022.

 

ICT Development Index (IDI)

Latest available figures for the IDI date back to year 2016. Mauritius with an index of 5.88 ranked first among African countries and 72nd out of 176 countries worldwide. The methodology for the computation of a revised version of IDI is still being reviewed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Consensus has not been reached on the new methodology. Hence, the index is not available for years 2017 onwards.
