Energy and Water Statistics – Year 2024

Highlights

 

1.      Total Primary Energy Requirement

In 2024, the total primary energy requirement (sum of imported and locally available fuels less re-exports and bunkering after adjusting for stock changes) was 1,614,872 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), up by 5.0% from 1,537,622 toe in 2023.

Imported fuels comprising, mainly, petroleum products (61.1%) and coal (29.8%) made up 90.9% (1,467,806 toe) of the total primary energy requirement in 2024. The remaining 9.1% (147,066 toe) was from local sources, namely, bagasse, hydro, wind, landfill gas, photovoltaic and fuelwood.

 

2.      Electricity

In 2024, electricity generation increased by 4.7% from 3,265.5 GWh (280,780 toe) in 2023 to 3,417.6 GWh (293,864 toe), of which 81.8% (2,796.6 GWh) was generated from non-renewable sources and 18.2% (621.0 GWh) from renewable sources.

The Independent Power Producers produced 53.0% of the total electricity generated and the Central Electricity Board produced the remaining 47.0%.

From 2023 to 2024, sales of electricity increased by 4.2% from 2,813.7 GWh to 2,931.5 GWh and the average sales price was at Rs. 7.47 per kWh.

 

3.      Water

The mean amount of rainfall recorded in the Island of Mauritius decreased by 14.0% from 2,543 millimetres in 2023 to 2,186 millimetres in 2024. During the same period, the total volume of potable water treated by the different treatment plants increased by 6.1% from 313.2 million cubic metres to 332.3 million cubic metres.
