Agricultural and fish production: Year 2022
Highlights
1. Sugar cane
The production of sugar cane decreased by 15.5% from 2,669,667 tonnes in 2021 to 2,256,806 tonnes in 2022. The average yield has decreased by 9.7% from 63.72 tonnes per hectare in 2021 to 57.57 in 2022. The area harvested decreased from 41,897 hectares in 2021 to 39,199 hectares in 2022.
The production of sugar went down by 9.0% from 255,818 tonnes in 2021 to 232,707 tonnes in 2022. Compared to 9.59% in 2021, the average extraction rate was 10.32% in 2022 representing an increase of 7.6%.
2. Tea
Area under tea plantation in 2022 was 659 hectares, representing a decrease of 1.5% over the figure of 669 in 2021. Production of green tea leaves went up by 26.2% from 5,034 tonnes in 2021 to 6,351 tonnes in 2022. The production of manufactured tea increased by 5.4% from 1,097 tonnes in 2021 to 1,156 tonnes in 2022.
3. Food crops
The area harvested under food crops for open fields decreased by 3.3% from 7,951 hectares in 2021 to 7,692 hectares in 2022. Production increased by 4.0% from 101,901 tonnes to 105,974 tonnes.
The area harvested under food crops for under covered cultures increased by 47.2% from 53 hectares in 2021 to 78 hectares in 2022. Production increased by 51.2% from 6,111 tonnes to 9,237 tonnes.
The total area harvested under food crops decreased by 2.9% from 8,004 hectares in 2021 to 7,770 hectares in 2022. The production went up by 6.7% from 108,012 tonnes to 115,211 tonnes.
4. Livestock
In 2022, beef production from live cattle was 2,071 tonnes, 13.6% higher than the production of 1,823 tonnes in 2021. Production of beef from the slaughter of imported cattle increased by 7.5%.
Production of goat meat and mutton increased by 34.1% from 41 tonnes in 2021 to 55 tonnes in 2022.
The production of pork increased by 1.6% from 574 tonnes in 2021 to 583 tonnes in 2022.
5. Poultry
The production of poultry increased by 13.4% from 49,100 tonnes in 2021 to 55,700 tonnes in 2022.
6. Fish
Fish production increased by 15.6% from 28,769 tonnes in 2021 to 33,254 tonnes in 2022. Production of other catch (tuna, bank etc) increased by 15.1% and that of fresh coastal fish catch increased by 26.5%.
