Education Statistics - Year 2019

Highlights

 

1.       Expenditure
          Government expenditure on education and training for the financial years 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 are estimated at Rs 18,176 million and Rs 19,013 million, representing 12.1% and 10.6% of total expenditure respectively.
2.         Pre-primary education
Pre-primary schools numbered 851 in March 2019 with an enrolment of 25,479 children of whom 48.9% were girls. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 4 and 5 years) works out to 96.2% with an average of 12 pupils per teacher.
3.         Primary education
As at March 2019, there were 319 primary schools with 85,730 pupils of whom 49.7% were girls. Total staff comprised 8,564 persons including 4,269 General Purpose Teachers and 1,265 Oriental Language teachers. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 6 to 11 years) is 95.4% and the pupil/teacher (general purpose) ratio works out to 21.
4.         Secondary education
        I.    General
As at March 2019, there were 180 schools providing secondary education in the general stream. The secondary school enrolment was 108,562 of whom 51.6% were girls. The number of teachers was 8,813. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 12 to 19 years) works out to 72.5% and the pupil/teacher ratio 12.
      II.    Pre-vocational
Pre-vocational education was dispensed in 111 schools in March 2019 with an enrolment of 3,781 students and 970 teaching staff. Boys pre-dominated in these pre-vocational schools, representing around 65.4% of enrolment.  The pupil/teacher ratio
was 4.
 
5.       Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC), School Certificate (SC) & Higher School Certificate (HSC) Results
 
The percentage of school candidates meeting PSAC requirement before re-assessment, was 75.2 in 2018.  After re-assessment, the percentage stood at 78.8. The pass rate for the SC declined from 71.6% in 2017 to 71.5% in 2018 and that for the HSC increased from 74.4% to 74.9%.
6.         Tertiary Education
Tertiary level enrolment decreased from 48,007 in 2017 to 47,398 students in 2018
