Year 2020 – Highlights

Vehicles registered

1.      At end of December 2020, some 600,053 vehicles were registered at the National Land Transport Authority, compared to 580,629 at the end of December 2019, i.e. an increase of 19,424 or 3.3%.
2.      Some 24,877 vehicles joined the fleet, whilst 5,453 were put out of circulation during the year.

3.     The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickup and dual-purpose vehicles (320,064 or 53%) and motorized two-wheelers (221,988 or 37%). The remaining 10% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.

 

Road traffic accidents

4.     The number of road traffic accidents decreased by 3.5% from 29,644 in 2019 to 28,611 in 2020.  Among these accidents, 119 were fatal (caused death) against 130 in the preceding year, down by 8.5%.
5.     Accident rate, (number of accidents per 100,000 mid-year population) is estimated at 2,341 compared to 2,425 in 2019. The number of accidents per 1,000 mid-year registered vehicles works out to 49 against 52 in 2019.

6.     In 2020, the number of fatalities was 131 (-9.0%) against the figure of 144 in 2019. Among the fatalities, 65 (49.6%) were riders/pillion riders of auto/motor cycle and 24 (18.3%) were pedestrians.
