Population and Vital Statistics - Republic of Mauritius, Year 2022

Highlights

 

Population

1.   As at end of 2022, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,261,196 comprising 623,181 males and 638,015 females.

2.   Compared to a figure of 1,263,888 at the end of 2021, the population decreased by 2,692 during the year 2022, representing a decrease of 0.21%.

3.   Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2022 was as follows:

                        Island of Mauritius      1,216,139

                        Island of Rodrigues         44,783

                        Other islands                       274

 4.   The dependency ratio, that is the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 65 years and above per 1,000 population aged 15-64 years, was 413.0 in 2021 and 416.1 in 2022.

 

Vital Statistics

5.   In 2022, the number of live births registered was 12,096, that is 886 or 6.8% lower than in 2021. The crude birth rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 10.3 for 2021 and 9.6 for 2022.

6.   There were 12,938 deaths registered in 2022, showing a decrease of 336 or 2.5% compared to 13,274 in 2021.  The crude death rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 10.5 in 2021 and 10.2 in 2022.

7.  The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2022 was 172, lower than the 2021 figure of 179. The infant mortality rate, however, increased from 13.8 per 1,000 live births in 2021 to 14.2 in 2022.

8.   The number of still births registered during the year 2022 was 111, compared to 131 in 2021.  The still birth rate decreased from 10.0 per 1,000 total births in 2021 to 9.1 in 2022.

9.  The number of marriages registered during the year 2022 was 9,558 i.e. 16.8% higher than the figure of 8,186 in 2021. The crude marriage rate increased from 12.9 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2021 to 15.1 in 2022.
