Change in employment from March 2018 to March 2019
1. Employment in large establishments increased by 709 from 321,859 (196,789 males and 125,070 females) in March 2018 to 322,568 (198,626 males and 123,942 females) in March 2019.
2. Main changes in employment were registered in the following industry groups:

3. Employment in the General Government Sector increased by 1,545 from 78,316 (47,231 males and 31,085 females) in March 2018 to 79,861 (47,608 males and 32,253 females) in March 2019, mainly in ‘Public administration and defence; compulsory social security’ (+1,471) and ‘Human health and social work activities’ (+426). Male and female employment increased respectively by 377 from 47,231 to 47,608 and by 1,168 from 31,085 to 32,253.
4. Employment in large Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) decreased by 3,824 from 50,577 (25,594 males and 24,983 females) to 46,753 (25,158 males and 21,595 females).
5. The number of foreign workers increased by 1,139 from 29,594 (21,505 males and 8,089 females) to 30,733 (24,516 males and 6,217 females).

6. Overall average monthly earnings in large establishments increased by 3.4% from Rs 30,809 to Rs 31,866. A general upward trend was observed in almost all industrial groups. Highest increases were registered in ‘Construction’ (+13.0%), ‘Mining and quarrying’ (+12.1%) and ‘Administrative and support service activities’ (+10.4%).
7. Average monthly earnings in large establishments of the EOE sector increased by 7.0% from Rs 16,824 to Rs 18,008.
