Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – First Quarter 2021
Highlights
1.
Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 481,900 in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 538,000 in December 2020. The decline in employment is partly due to seasonality (employment level usually higher in December) and to a decrease in employment during the month of March 2021 (second lockdown as from 10 March 2021).
2.
The number of unemployed is estimated at 52,500 at the first quarter of 2021 compared to 61,400 at December 2020.
3.
Unemployment rate works out to 9.8% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 10.2% in December 2020.
4.
The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force increased from 405,500 in December 2020 to 470,200 in the first quarter of 2021. This increase is explained by the fact that many individuals, mainly self-employed persons, could not work in March 2021 due to the lockdown.
