1. Greenhouse gas (GHG)
GHG emissions increased by 2.5% from 2023 to 2024. Gross emissions went up from 6,257 to 6,408 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and net emissions, after absorption by forest and land use practices from 5,878 to 6,026 thousand tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent.
In 2024, the energy sector accounted for the largest share of emissions (78.3%), followed by the waste sector (11.8%).

2. Solid waste
In 2024, solid waste landfilled at Mare Chicose weighed 498,309 tonnes, 7.9% lower than in 2023 (541,141 tonnes).

3. Land use
Between 2023 and 2024, the harvested area under cultivation of sugarcane decreased by 3.1% from 35,863 hectares to 34,759 hectares; tea plantation decreased from 627 hectares in 2023 to 623 hectares in 2024; and food crops increased by 4.1% from 9,211 hectares to 9,585 hectares.

4. Water
In 2024, the Island of Mauritius received 4,077 million cubic metres of water rainfall, 14.0% lower when compared to 4,742 million cubic metres in 2023.
Total water utilisation was estimated at 1,020 million cubic metres in 2024. Hydropower accounted for 39%, the domestic, industrial and tourism sector for 34% and the remaining 27% was used by the agricultural sector.

5. Complaints

Complaints attended by the Pollution Prevention and Control Division of the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change decreased by 4.1% from 436 in 2023 to 418 in 2024.
The complaints were mainly due to: bare land (20%), noise (18%) and air pollution (13%).
