Education Statistics - Year 2020Highlights
1. Expenditure
Government expenditure on education and training for the financial year 2019/2020 was estimated at Rs 18,303 million compared to Rs 18,301 million for 2018/2019, representing 9.3% and 12.2% of total expenditure respectively.
2. Pre-primary education
Pre-primary schools numbered 833 in March 2020 with an enrolment of 24,859 children of whom 48.6% were girls. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 4 and 5 years) works out to 96.9% with an average of 12 pupils per teacher.
3. Primary education
As at March 2020, there were 319 primary schools with 82,004 pupils of whom 49.6% were girls. The number of persons employed comprised 8,816 persons including 4,527 General Purpose Teachers and 1,284 Oriental Language teachers. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per 100 population aged 6 to 11 years) is 94.5% and the pupil/teacher (general purpose) ratio works out to 18.
4. Secondary education
As at March 2020, there were 179 schools providing secondary Regular and Extended Education. The secondary school enrolment was 105,321 of whom 51.6% were girls. The number of teachers was 9,624. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (number of students enrolled per
100 population aged 12 to 19 years) works out to 71.9% and the pupil/teacher ratio 11.
5. Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC), School Certificate (SC) & Higher School Certificate (HSC) Results
The percentage of school candidates meeting PSAC requirement before re-assessment, was 73.9 in 2019. After re-assessment, the percentage stood at 77.3. The pass rate for the SC declined from 71.5% in 2018 to 70.9% in 2019 and that for the HSC increased slightly from 74.9% to 75.0%.
6. Tertiary Education
Tertiary level enrolment increased from 47,398 in 2018 to 49,205 students in 2019.
