Highlights
Population
1. As at end of 2018, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,265,637 comprising 626,261 males and 639,376 females.
2. Compared to a figure of 1,265,309 at the end of 2017, the population increased by 328 or 0.03% during the year 2018.
3. Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2018 was as follows:

4. The dependency ratio, that is the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 65 years and above per 1,000 population aged 15-64 years, was 408.1 in 2017 and 408.3 in 2018.
Vital Statistics
5. In 2018, the number of live births registered was 12,965, that is 514 or 3.8% less than in 2017. The crude birth rate, thus, decreased from 10.7 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2017 to 10.2 in 2018.
6. There were 10,787 deaths registered in 2018, showing an increase of 647 or 6.4% as compared to 10,140 in 2017. The crude death rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 8 in 2017 and 8.5 in 2018.
7. The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2018 was 181, higher than the 2017 figure of 164. The infant mortality rate increased from 12.2 per 1,000 live births in 2017 to 14 in 2018.
8. The number of still births registered during the year 2018 was 130, compared to 135 in 2017. The still birth rate remained at 9.9 per 1,000 total births in both years.
9. The number of marriages registered during the year 2018 was 10,034, i.e. 2.8% higher than the figure of 9,757 in 2017. The crude marriage rate increased from 15.4 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2017 to 15.9 in 2018.
