Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Year 2024

1. The labour force, employment and unemployment for the year 2024 are based on the results of the Continuous Multi-Purpose Household Survey (CMPHS).

2. Labour force increased by 3,300 (-3,600 males and +6,900 females) from 592,800 in 2023 to 596,100 in 2024. During the same period, the number of those outside labour force increased by 200 from 422,200 to 422,400.

3. Mauritian employment increased by 5,100 (-2,200 males and +7,300 females) from 555,200 in 2023 to 560,300 in 2024.

4. Unemployment decreased by 1,800 (-1,400 males and -400 females) from 37,600 in 2023 to 35,800 in 2024 resulting in an unemployment rate of 6.0%. From 2023 to 2024, male unemployment rate decreased from 4.6% to 4.3% and female unemployment rate decreased from 8.7% to 8.3%.

5. Unemployment rate in 2024 was highest in the lowest age group (16 to 24 years) with a rate of 17.5% (15.1% for male and 20.4 for female) and decreased progressively with increasing age.
