Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – 4

Quarter 2025
Highlights
1.
Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 560,900 in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to 556,400 in the third quarter of 2025 and 550,400 in the fourth quarter of 2024.
2.
The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2025 is estimated at 5.4%, compared to the rate of 5.6%, at the third quarter of 2025 and the rate of 5.7% at the fourth quarter of 2024.

The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 399,100 in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to 402,100 in the third quarter of 2025 and 408,300 in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2025 were:
(i)
The 31,800 unemployed comprised 13,300 males (42%) and 18,500 females (58%)
(ii)
Aro
und 17,900 (56%) of the unemployed were single; males (76%) and females (42%).
(iii)
Some 15,900 (50%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 3,000 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
(iv)
Around 26,700 (84%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
(v)
Some 9,600 (30%) were looking for a job for the first time.
(vi)
Around 12,400 (39%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
(vii)
Some 2,600 or 8% of the unemployed were heads of households.
(viii)
Around 2,800 (9%) lived in households with no employed persons.
(ix)
Some 10,800 or about 34% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
(x)
There were 6,100 (19%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 2,900 possessed a qualification below SC.
