Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Fourth Quarter 2022

Highlights


1.       Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 531,500 in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to 524,800 in the third quarter of 2022 and 509,900 in the fourth quarter of 2021.

2.       The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2022 is estimated at 6.8%, compared to the rate of 7.5% at the third quarter of 2022 and the rate of 8.1% at the fourth quarter of 2021.

3.       The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 441,000 in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to 443,300 in the third quarter of 2022 and 456,900 in the fourth quarter of 2021.

4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2022 were:

​​​​​The 38,800 unemployed comprised 18,300 males (47%) and 20,500 females (53%).
​(ii​​)
Around 25,000 (64%) of the unemployed were single; males (75%) and females (55%).
​(iii​​)
​​Some 16,400 (42%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 1,200 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
​(iv​​)
​​Around 26,100 (67%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
(v​​)
​​Some 16,500 (43%) were looking for a job for the first time. ​
​(vi​​)
 Around 12,700 (33%) were registered at the Employment Service Information Centre.
​(vii​​)
​​Some 5,700 or 15% of the unemployed were heads of households. ​
​(viii​​)
 Around 7,500 (19%) lived in households with no employed persons.
​(ix)
Some 14,000 or about 36% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
(​x)
There were 11,400 (29%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job.  Some 3,500 possessed a qualification below SC.
