​​Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Third Quarter 2025

 

Highlights



1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 556,400 in the third quarter of 2025 compared to 550,100 in the second quarter of 2025 and 547,400 in the third quarter of 2024.

2.   The unemployment rate for the third quarter of 2025 is estimated at 5.6%, compared to the rate of 5.9%, at the second quarter of 2025 and also at the third quarter of 2024.

3.   The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 402,100 in the third quarter of 2025 compared to 409,800 in the second quarter of 2025 and 411,600 in the third quarter of 2024.

​4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the third quarter of 2025 were:

      (i) The 32,800 unemployed comprised 13,900 males (42%) and 18,900 females (58%).

      (ii) Around 17,900 (55%) of the unemployed were single; males (73%) and females (41%).

  1.       (iii) Some 15,100 (46%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 3,000 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
  2.       (iv) Around 26,800 (82%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
  3.       (v) Some 9,600 (29%) were looking for a job for the first time.
  4.       (vi) Around 14,400 (44%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
  5.       (vii) Some 3,400 or 10% of the unemployed were heads of households.
  6.       (viii) Around 5,400 (16%) lived in households with no employed persons.
  7.       (ix) Some 11,100 or about 34% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
  8.       (x) ​​There were 5,400 (16%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job.  Some 3,100 possessed a qualification below SC.
