Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – 3rd Quarter 2024
Highlights
1. Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 560,700 in the third quarter of 2024 compared to 556,700 in the second quarter of 2024 and 556,100 in the third quarter of 2023.
2. The unemployment rate for the third quarter of 2024 is estimated at 5.9%, compared to the rate of 6.2% at the second quarter of 2024 and the rate of 6.3% at the third quarter of 2023.
3. The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 423,400 in the third quarter of 2024 compared to 424,500 in the second quarter of 2024 and 422,100 in the third quarter of 2023.
4. The main characteristics of the unemployed at the third quarter of 2024 were:

The 35,200 unemployed comprised 14,300 males (41%) and 20,900 females (59%).

(ii)

Around 21,300 (61%) of the unemployed were single; males (80%) and females (47%).

(iii)
|
Some 18,600 (53%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 2,800 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.

Around 28,500 (81%) had been looking for work for up to one year.

(v)
|
Some 10,600 (30%) were looking for a job for the first time.
|
(vi)
|
Around 13,200 (38%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.

(vii)

Some 3,400 or 10% of the unemployed were heads of households.

Around 6,500 (18%) lived in households with no employed persons.

(ix)

Some 12,500 or about 36% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.

There were 6,900 (20%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 3,600 possessed a qualification below SC.
