Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – 2nd Quarter 2025

Highlights


1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 550,100 in the second quarter of 2025 compared to 547,600 in the first quarter of 2025 and 543,900 in the second quarter of 2024.
2.   The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2025 is estimated at 5.9%, compared to the rate of 6.0%, at the first quarter of 2025 and the rate of 6.1% at the second quarter of 2024.

3.   The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 409,800 in the second quarter of 2025 compared to 410,200 in the first quarter of 2025 and 412,700 in the second quarter of 2024.

4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2025 were:

​(i)
​The 34,200 unemployed comprised 14,200 males (42%) and 20,000 females (58%).
​(ii)
​Around 19,300 (56%) of the unemployed were single; males (72%) and females (46%).
​(iii)
​Some 15,2​00 (44%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 3,200 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
​(iv)
​Around 27,400 (80%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
​(v)
​Some 9,400 (27%) were looking for a job for the first time.
​(vi)
​Around 14,700 (43%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
​(vii)
​Some 3,100 or 9% of the unemployed were heads of households.
​(viii)
​Around 3,900 (11%) lived in households with no employed persons.
​(ix)
​Some 12,800 or about 37% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
​(x)​​
​There were 5,500 (16%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job.  Some 1,800 possessed a qualification below SC.
