Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – 1st Quarter 2026

Highlights

1.	Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 553,700 in the first quarter of 2026 compared to 560,900 in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 547,600 in the first quarter of 2025.
2.	The unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2026 is estimated at 5.7%, compared to the rate of 5.4%, at the fourth quarter of 2025 and the rate of 6.0% at the first quarter of 2025.
3.	The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 403,800 in the first quarter of 2026 compared to 399,100 in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 410,200 in the first quarter of 2025.
4.	The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2026 were:
	(i)	The 33,300 unemployed comprised 14,300 males (43%) and 19,000 females (57%).
	(ii)	Around 17,700 (53%) of the unemployed were single; males (66%) and females (44%).
	(iii)	Some 17,400 (52%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 3,200 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
	(iv)	Around 27,400 (82%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
	(v)	Some 9,700 (29%) were looking for a job for the first time.
	(vi)	Around 13,400 (40%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
	(vii)	Some 4,900 or 15% of the unemployed were heads of households.
	(viii)	Around 5,700 (17%) lived in households with no employed persons.
	(ix)	Some 12,100 or about 36% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
	(x)	There were 6,400 (19%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job. Some 2,800 possessed a qualification below SC.
