Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – First Quarter 2025

 Highlights

1.       Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 547,600 in the first quarter of 2025 compared to 550,400 in the fourth quarter of 2024 and 546,600 in the first quarter of 2024.

2.       The unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2025 is estimated at 6.0%, compared to the rate of 5.7%, at the fourth quarter of 2024 and the rate of 6.2% at the first quarter of 2024.

3.       The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 410,200 in the first quarter of 2025 compared to 408,300 in the fourth quarter of 2024 and 409,000 in the first quarter of 2024.

4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2025 were:

​​​(i)​
​​The 35,200 unemployed comprised 15,000 males (43%) and 20,200 females (57%).
​(ii)
​Around 19,100 (54%) of the unemployed were single; males (75%) and females (39%).
​(iii)
​Some 17,400 (49%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 2,900 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.
​(iv)
​Around 29,900 (85%) had been looking for work for up to one year.
(v)
  1. Some 9,300 (26%) were looking for a job for the first time.
​(vi)
​Around 14,600 (41%) were registered at the Employment Information Centre.
​(vii)
​Some 3,700 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
​(viii)
​Around 5,700 (16%) lived in households with no employed persons.
​(ix)
​Some 12,300 or about 35% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.
​(x)
There were 6,300 (18%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job.  Some 2,600 possessed a qualification below SC.
