Agricultural and fish production: Year 2025
Highlights
1. Sugar cane
The production of sugar cane increased by 5.7% from 2,195,802 tonnes in 2024 to 2,321,704 tonnes in 2025. The average yield has increased by 8.7% from 63.17 tonnes per hectare in 2024 to 68.68 in 2025. The area harvested decreased from 34,759 hectares in 2024 to 33,805 hectares in 2025.
The production of sugar went down by 2.3% from 225,547 tonnes in 2024 to 220,305 tonnes in 2025. Compared to 10.28% in 2024, the average extraction rate was 9.49% in 2025, representing a decrease of 7.7%.
2. Tea
Area under tea plantation in 2025 was 623 hectares, representing a decrease of 1.9% over the figure of 635 hectares in 2024. Production of green tea leaves went down by 11.6% from 6,018 tonnes in 2024 to 5,317 tonnes in 2025. The production of manufactured tea decreased by 12.9% from 1,186 tonnes in 2024 to 1,033 tonnes in 2025.
3. Food crops
The area harvested under food crops for open fields increased by 4.4% from 9,567.1 hectares in 2024 to 9,991.1 hectares in 2025. Production increased by 9.9% from 159,277.5 tonnes in 2024 to 175,122.2 tonnes in 2025.
The area harvested under food crops for under covered cultures increased by 22.9% from 100.1 hectares in 2024 to 123.0 hectares in 2025. The production increased by 36.7% from 10,423.9 tonnes to 14,249.9 tonnes.
The total area harvested under food crops increased by 4.6% from 9,667.2 hectares in 2024 to 10,114.1 hectares in 2025. The total production went up by 11.6% from 169,700.8 tonnes to 189,372.1 tonnes.
4. Livestock
In 2025, beef production from live cattle was 2,199 tonnes, 3.9% higher than the production of 2,116 tonnes in 2024. Production of beef from the slaughter of imported cattle increased by 7.9%.
Production of goat meat and mutton increased by 8.2% from 49 tonnes in 2024 to 53 tonnes in 2025.
The production of pork increased by 9.8% from 633 tonnes in 2024 to 695 tonnes in 2025.
5. Poultry
The production of poultry increased by 5.8% from 53,900 tonnes in 2024 to 57,000 tonnes in 2025.
6. Fish
Fish production decreased by 1.3% from 38,445 tonnes in 2024 to 37,928 tonnes in 2025. Production of other catch (tuna, bank etc) decreased by 2.4% and that of fresh coastal fish catch increased by 24.8%.
