Population and Vital Statistics - Republic of Mauritius, Year 2023

Highlights

Population

1.   As at end of 2023, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,260,379 comprising 622,647 males and 637,732 females.

2.   Compared to a figure of 1,261,196 at the end of 2022, the population decreased by 817 during the year 2023, representing a decrease of 0.06%.

3.   Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2023 was as follows:

                        Island of Mauritius      1,214,997

                        Island of Rodrigues         45,108

                        Other islands                       274

4.   The dependency ratio, that is the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 65 years and above per 1,000 population aged 15-64 years, was 416.1 in 2022 and 420.9 in 2023.

 

Vital Statistics

5.   In 2023, the number of live births registered was 12,872, that is 776 or 6.4% higher than in 2022. The crude birth rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 9.6 for 2022 and 10.2 for 2023.

6.   There were 11,839 deaths registered in 2023, showing a decrease of 1,099 or 8.5% compared to 12,938 in 2022.  The crude death rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 10.2 in 2022 and 9.4 in 2023.

7.  The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2023 was 168, lower than the 2022 figure of 172. The infant mortality rate decreased from 14.2 per 1,000 live births in 2022 to 13.1 in 2023.

8.   The number of still births registered during the year 2023 was 104, compared to 111 in 2022.  The still birth rate decreased from 9.1 per 1,000 total births in 2022 to 8.0 in 2023.

9.  The number of marriages registered during the year 2023 was 8,654, i.e. 9.5% lower than the figure of 9,558 in 2022. The crude marriage rate decreased from 15.1 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2022 to 13.7 in 2023.
