Population
 
1.  As at end of 2013, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,259,838 comprising 623,472  males and 636,366  females.
2.  Compared to a figure of 1,257,490 at the end of 2012, the population increased by 2,348 or 0.2% during the year 2013.
3.   Islandwise, the population as at 31 December 2013 was as follows:
                        Island of Mauritius      1,218,060
                        Island of Rodrigues         41,504
                        Other islands                     274
 
4.  The population density was around 618 persons per square kilometre in 2013, slightly higher than the 2012 figure of 616.
 
5.  The dependency ratio, that is the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 65 years and above per 1,000 population aged 15-64 years was 413 in 2013 compared to 416 in 2012.
 
Vital Statistics
 
6.   In 2013, the number of live births registered was 13,688, that is 806 less than in 2012.  The crude birth rate thus decreased from 11.5 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2012 to 10.9 in 2013.
7.   There were 9,440 deaths registered in 2013, showing an increase of 97 as compared to 2012 (9,343).  The crude death rate per 1,000 mid-year population was 7.4 in 2012 and 7.5 in 2013.
8.  The number of infant deaths registered during the year 2013 was 165, lower than the 2012 figure of 199. The infant mortality rate decreased from 13.7 per 1,000 live births in 2012 to 12.1 in 2013.
9.   The number of still births registered during the year 2013 was 117 compared to 140 in 2012.  Consequently, the still birth rate decreased from 9.6 per 1,000 total births in 2012 to 8.5 in 2013.
10.  The number of marriages registered during the year 2013 was 9,574 compared to 10,382 in 2012.  The crude marriage rate declined from 16.5 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population in 2012 to 15.2 in 2013.
